Matthew De Marco

Maltatype started off as a crowd-sourced collection of photographs celebrating the typography which adorns the streets of Malta and Gozo, mostly in the forms of shop-signs and other public signage. These photographs are curated in an online gallery by three graphic designers: Matt Demarco, Ed Dingli and Katerina Karamallaki and their purpose is to expose these valuable historic artifacts, which often go unnoticed by the public in a saturated urban environment.

Maltatype celebrates the type, it’s history and it’s designers, giving it relevance and recognition in the 21st century and beyond.

“Our approach is as much a preservation of the past as it is a glance into the future. We aim to elevate these signs beyond their place on derelict and neglected buildings, by creating original work that is designed to sustain their timeworn beauty while giving them value in a contemporary context.”
